Men's Soccer Ready For Home Opener Friday

ANDERSON, S.C. -- In a decade of college coaching, Anderson College head men's soccer coach Rob Miller says he has never experienced anything like the 2003 season. Simply put, the Trojans could not catch a break. AC finished 3-13-3 overall and 3-4-3 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference, but the records don't even begin to tell the story. The Trojans played six overtime matches (1-2-3) and suffered six losses by one goal and two losses by two goals. "We played six overtime matches, and we had a lot of injuries," Miller said. "I didn't see it coming. I was blindsided. That was the worst year I've had in 10 years. It was bizarre. I can't explain it. It was a tough season. But the players never gave up even though we had so many disappointing things happen to us. We outplayed a lot of teams and lost. You can outplay a team, but the goals are what matters." The Trojans opened the 2004 season with an 8-0 loss to No. 15 Coastal Carolina Wednesday night. AC opens its home schedule Friday at 7 p.m. against Tennessee Temple at Smethers Field. After the 2003 season, Miller went to work on increasing the team's depth and talent level. "Most of the guys are my guys now," he said. "It's on me now. There are no excuses. We signed a lot of players this year. They all of them come from good soccer backgrounds and they're solid. Now, we have to put that all together. We have a good balance of returning players, transfers (4), and freshmen (12). I believe four or five of the freshmen will contribute right away." Among the key returnees are defender Robert Rivers, who was All-CVAC as a freshman; defender Jody Forno, forward Michael Zion (4 goals, 2 assists), midfielder Wrenel Roberts, and goalkeeper Jack Ward. "Robert is a good athlete, and he worked hard in the weight room in the off-season to get a little bigger and a little stronger," Miller said. "Jody was a Division I transfer who gave us some leadership. He was the anchor of the team. Michael had a very good year for a freshman. Jack struggled early, but he had a good second half of the season." Season Statistics
