Second Half Struggles Cost Trojans at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The No. 10 Anderson University men's lacrosse team took their second loss of the season to South Atlantic Conference rival Newberry College on Wednesday (Mar. 29) by a score of 17-12.

Newberry jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of regulation, but the Trojans were able to respond as Matthew Rodgers got Anderson on the scoreboard off an assist from Max Calabrese. His brother Nick Calabrese tied up the match with a quick take to the back of the net, followed by a quick strike from Garrett Hawkins, as the Trojans took their first lead of the night. With two more answers from the Wolves, Anderson left the first quarter down 4-3.

A scoreless first eight minutes of the second was interrupted by Newberry's Baker Westmorland, as he put the Wolves up by two. Goals from Anderson's Radyn Badrun, Chase Robertson, and Beau Henson once again found the high stakes matchup tied at seven heading into halftime.

Strike after strike, both teams were relentless in their scoring coming out of halftime. Around the 10-minute mark, the Trojans found themselves, once again, tied up (9-9). That is, until the D-pole Peyton Jefferson put the Trojans back on top with a coast-to-coast goal, his seventh of the season. The Wolves rallied from a one score deficit to put four more unanswered in the net, heading into the fourth and final stretch of play 14-10.

Newberry continued their run with three more scores, going on an 8-0 run to take control of the match. Badraun was able to score twice more before the final buzzer, with the Trojans falling short by a score of 17-12.

The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday (Apr. 1) for a non-conference matchup at North Greenville, with the first faceoff scheduled for noon. Video and live stats can be found at autrojans.com.
