Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener to The Citadel

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team used a pair of goals in each half to get past Anderson, 4-1, in the Trojans' home opener, Sunday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.

"I'm happy with the effort displayed by our team," said Anderson head coach Sarah Jacobs. "We saw improvements from last game but still have work to do. We have challenged ourselves with two difficult opponents and will use these opportunities to learn and prepare for our conference schedule."

The opening regular-season match of the spring for both squads was played in a steady rain for much of the afternoon with the first half being played on even terms despite the Bulldogs owning a one-goal lead at the break.

Anderson senior forward Gabbie Fleming pit the Trojans ahead with the first goal of the match when she put home a deflection off the Bulldogs' keeper in the 12th minute of action.

The Citadel evened the score at one apiece with a goal in the 27th minute and took the lead for good with another goal in the 34th minute.

The Bulldogs put the match out of reach with a pair of goals in a three-minute span early in the second frame.
The Citadel recorded 12 shots, while the Trojans notched six shots on the afternoon. AU senior goalkeeper Madison Paige came up with six saves, while sophomore Jeanette Campbell came up with a save in the second half.

Following a 10-day layoff, Anderson will get back on the pitch Thursday, Feb. 25, when the Trojans open their home schedule with a two-match homestand, beginning with Queens. Kick-off at Trojan Stadium is slated for 5 p.m
