MORGANTON, N.C. – Led by freshman Reece Coleman's three-round, 4-under-par 206,the Anderson University men's golf team closed out its fall season with a second-place finish at Lenoir-Rhyne's Donald Ross Intercollegiate.
The Bears hosted the 54-hole event on a 6,718 yard, par-70 Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
"We started slow today," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "But we finished strong for a good finish in a strong field. Got some good head to head wins as well."
Belmont Abbey led the two-day tourney wire-to-wire and held off the Trojans by just three shots. Erskine finished two shots further back in third place, with Mount Olive remaining in the fourth slot. Lenoir-Rhyne claimed fifth place, while Catawba finished in sixth place. Coker moved up one spot into seventh place, with North Greenville slipping one spot into eighth.
Belmont Abbey was ninth, while Barton (B) finished 10th. Fayetteville State fell to 11th, while Ohio Valley, Emmanuel, Mars Hill, Montreat and Chowan rounded out the 16-team field.
Erskine's Alberto Avila (70-67-68=205) overcame a one-shot deficit to win individual medalist honors by just one stroke over the Trojans' Coleman (72-66-68=206). Belmont Abbey's Ben Loudermilk (72-64-71=207), who led following Monday's first two rounds, finished alone in third place. Belmont Abbey's Conner Fahey (71-68-69=208) and Catawba's Tanner Bibey (70-69-69=208) finished in a tie for fourth.
AU senior Jake Miller finished in a tie for sixth place, with freshman Anthony Sutton finishing in a six-way tie for 18th. Classmate Caleb Henson shared the 34th slot, while senior Brady Cox moved up 14 spots and finished in a tie for 39th. Junior Cal Brock also jumped 10 spots and shared 75th place.
