Men’s Golf Finishes Tied for 15th Place at Kiawah Island Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Led by freshman Anthony Sutton's two-day, 3-over-par 147, the Anderson University men's golf team finished tied for 15th place, Tuesday at the Kiawah Island Invitational.

The 36-hole event was hosted by USC Aiken on the 6,902 yard, par-72 Osprey Point Golf Course.

"Obviously we are a bit disappointed with our score today," said Anderson Head Coach Danny Neal. "Following a 294 with a 309 is not how we wanted to finish, especially given that the conditions were better today. Other than Anthony Sutton's great round of 70, the rest of the team just couldn't get anything going today. Hopefully, as our young team gets more experience, we will start to demonstrate the consistency that we need to be."

Lander overcame a three-stroke deficit to win the 36-hole event by three shots over runner-up USC Aiken. Lee University vaulted from eighth place into a share of third alongside Mount Olive, while Southern Wesleyan, Valdosta State and Clayton State finished in a tie for fifth place. Rollins and Limestone tied for the eighth slot, with Columbus State and West Georgia finishing 10th and 11th, respectively.

Erskine, Georgia College, Lenoir-Rhyne, Anderson, Eckerd, Fayetteville State, and Chowan finished out the 18-team field.

Lander's Jon Parker (66-68=134) led the event wire-to-wire and claimed individual honors by one shot over teammate Chris Fortenberry (68-67=135). Southern Wesleyan's Eric Shea (71-65=136), who won last week's AU Invitational, finished one shot further back in a tie for third place, alongside the host Pacer's Leonardo Bono (68-68=136).

Sutton (77-70=147) trimmed seven strokes off his first-round effort on Monday and jumped from a tie for 63rd place into a four-way tie for 37th. Senior Jake Miller (71-77=148) finished in a tie for 41st, with freshman Reece Coleman claiming a share of 61st place after carding a two-round 151.

Freshman Caleb Henson posted a two-day 159 and finished 84th, while senior Brady Cox (81-83=164) finished in 87th place.

The Trojans are slated to return to the links at the North Georgia Fall Invitational on Monday, Sept. 30
