MORGANTON, N.C. – Paced by freshman Reece Coleman's two-round, 2-under-par 138, the Anderson University men's golf team is in second place following the first two rounds of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate.
Lenoir-Rhyne is hosting the 54-hole, two-day event, at the 6,718 yard, par-70 Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
"We got solid play from the team," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "It's good to get two good rounds back-to-back. Now we are in position to try and finish the tournament in a strong way. Proud of the guys for staying focused and grinding throughout the day."
Belmont Abbey leads the 16-team field by just one shot over the second-place Trojans, with Erskine just two shots further back. Mount Olive is fourth, with the host Bears and Catawba tied for fifth place. North Greenville is in the seventh slot after Monday's first two rounds, while Coker and Fayetteville State are eighth and ninth, respectively.
Belmont Abbey (B) is 10th, with Barton, Ohio Valley, Mars Hill, Emmanuel, Montreat and Chowan finishing out the field.
Belmont Abbey's Ben Loudermilk (72-64=136) leads Erskine's Alberto Avila (70-67=137) by one shot entering Tuesday's final round, while Coleman (72-66=138) is alone in third place and in contention for individual medalist honors after firing a season-low 4-under-par 66 in Monday's second round. AU senior Jake Miller is in a three-way tie for fourth place after carding a two-round 139, including a season-best 68 in the first round. The Anderson, S.C., native shares fourth place alongside Belmont Abbey's Conner Fahey (71-68=139) and Catawba's Tanner Bibey (70-69=139).
Freshman Anthony Sutton is just two shots further back in a tie for ninth place, while classmate Caleb Henson shares the 30th spot. Senior Brady Cox is tied for 53rd, with junior Cal Brock tied for 85th.
The final round is slated to get underway Tuesday morning.
