ROCK HILL, S.C. - Using a pair of first-half goals from senior
Laura Linehan, fifth-ranked and top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne held off
the No. four seed Anderson Trojans, 2-0, in semifinal round action
of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Women's Soccer Tournament
Friday evening at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex.
Making its first-ever appearance in the tournament semifinals,
Anderson (9-10-1) had its season end, but not before claiming a No.
10 ranking in the Southeast Region during the regular season and
setting a new school record with seven shutouts.
Lenoir-Rhyne (17-1) won its school-record 16th consecutive match after dropping its second contest of the season to Florida Tech and advances to meet second-seeded Wingate, a 5-2 winner past No. 3 seed Newberry.
Linehan, a first-team all conference forward from San Diego, Calif., put the Bears on top early with her 11th goal of the season just 55 seconds into the contest.
She notched her second score of the contest in the 24th minute after taking a pass from teammate Jessica Lintz and worked one-on-one past AU net-minder Katelyn Neipp.
Lenoir-Rhyne outshot AU, 22-2, on the night and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Neipp, a first-team all-conference goalkeeper, recorded four
saves, while L-R keeper Caitlin Scruggs did not post a save, as the
AU offense was unable to put any shots on goal.
