ANDERSON, S.C. - The visiting Newberry Wolves used two goals in the final eight minutes of action to hold off Anderson, 2-1, in South Atlantic Conference play on a soggy Trojan Stadium pitch Wednesday afternoon.

Anderson slipped to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in league play, while Newberry (5-1, 2-0 SAC) won its third decision in the last four outings.

The middle match of a three-game homestand for the Trojans was a defensive battle for much of the contest, with each team battling for an advantage. Newberry forward Ashley Reetz fired a shot wide of the net less than two minutes into the match, but AU countered with a trio of attempts in the 10th and 11th minutes of action.

The first half was evenly played, as reflected by the equal number of shots taken by each team - six. But neither squad was able to find the back of the net in the opening frame.

That quickly changed early in the second half, as Trojan sophomore Krystal Goss found freshman midfielder Summer Miller in front of the net and the Anderson, S.C., native notched her first collegiate goal at the 50:26 mark to give AU the 1-0 lead.

Reetz nearly evened the score in the 63rd minute, but her shot deflected off AU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp and bounced high off the crossbar.

The two teams traded offensive attacks for the next several minutes, but neither team was able to break through until the Wolves' Tiffany Kinner took advantage of another deflected shot to notch her fourth goal of the season and knot the score at 1-1 in the 82nd minute.

With both teams pressing in the final minutes, Newberry freshman Braydon Miller fired a cross into the box from the left side and fellow freshman Mary Stanton headed home the game-winning score with just 1:31 remaining on the clock.

Newberry outshot the Trojans, 14-11 on the afternoon, while holding a narrow 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Neipp suffered the loss for AU, while Newberry's Emily Rhoades earned the win, with both keepers going the distance.

Anderson closes out its three-match homestand on Saturday when Carson-Newman invades Trojan Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. versus the Eagles.
