Mount Olive Women Rally To Beat AC In OT

ANDERSON, S.C. - Melanie Cobb scored two goals, including the match winner 3:13 into the first overtime, to lead Mount Olive College to a 2-1 victory over Anderson College in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's match Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field. Mount Olive, 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the CVAC, trailed 1-0 after AC's Crystal Gaffney scored at 58:05 from five yards out. The loss drops Anderson to 0-4, 0-1. But 11 minutes later, Mount Olive tied the match when Kate Painter bumped a short pass off the goal line to Cobb, who then found the back of the AC net. Neither team was able to score in the final 20 minutes of regulation. The best chance for either team came in the 80th minute when Painter missed from point blank range. Three minutes into the first overtime, Cobb fired a shot that was stopped by AC goalkeeper Meghan Woodall, but Woodall lost control and Cobb scored on the rebound. Mount Olive outshot Anderson, 27-13. Mount Olive goalkeeper Heather Ressler made nine saves to earn the victory.
