Women's Soccer Team Will Depend On Freshmen

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College head women's soccer coach Bailey Woods calls the 2004 freshman class the best in the program's history. "I think it's going to be the strongest team we've had," said Woods, who is entering his fifth season at AC. "I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do. On paper, they look really good." The Lady Trojans (0-1) will try and even their record on Friday when they travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to face Georgia College and State University. Woods anticipates having 12 new players on his roster this season. "The quality top to bottom is strong this year," he said. "We signed three from Georgia, one from North Carolina, two from Michigan, and one from Ohio. It's a diverse group as far as their playing styles. We're going to have a lot of options. We've always played a 3-4-3. Last year, we used a four-back system at times. We may play a little bit of both or play five midfielders at times. "I wanted to get stronger fundamentals and improve the overall speed of the team. I wanted players who could play at a higher level as far as physical play. A majority of the new players have played at a high level of club ball." The Lady Trojans finished the 2003 season with a record of 8-10-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. Two of the conference losses were by one goal and three were by two goals. AC did manage a four-match winning streak at mid-season and its first victory ever over CVAC foe Barton. "I think this is the toughest schedule we've had with two Division I teams -- Furman and Charleston Southern -- on the road," Woods said. "I wanted to challenge them in the non-conference matches so they will be prepared for the conference matches. I think the schedule will help us in the long run. We may not have the best overall record, but I think we'll see some improvement in the conference record." The Lady Trojans lost a tiebreaker to miss a trip to the CVAC Tournament last season. "I want us to maximize our potential going into conference play," Woods said. "Our goal this year is to host a first-round conference match and get to the semifinals. That's a reasonable goal."
