Softball Earns Top-Seed; Named One of Two Host Sites For NCAA Southeast Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Anderson University softball team has been seeded first in the NCAA's Southeast Region and will face eighth-seeded Francis Marion on Thursday, as announced by the NCAA selection Committee Monday morning.

No. 16 Anderson (38-8), along with No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne, are the top two teams in the region rankings, with each hosting half of the eight-team field for the Southeast Regional, with the Trojans squaring off against the Patriots (33-20) at 12 p.m. at the AU Softball Complex.

King (41-15), the No. 4 seed, will faceoff with No. 5 Lincoln Memorial (35-18) at 2:30 p.m. at the AU Softball Complex on Thursday.

After capturing the South Atlantic Conference regular-season title, Thursday's contest will mark the sixth overall appearance by the Trojans in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.

The Trojans and Patriots have met on just seven occasions in school history, between the years 2003-2006, with Francis Marion defeating the Trojans six times. Anderson's only win came at home on Feb. 13, 2005 with the Trojans winning game one, 2-0, at Smethers Field.

The other half of the double elimination event features second-seeded and nationally 25th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne (37-14) playing host to seventh-seeded Wingate (35-17) in Hickory, N.C. while third-seeded and nationally 17th-ranked North Georgia (42-15) faces sixth-seeded Carson-Newman (35-16).

The two winners will advance to a two-out-of-three Super Regional, slated for May 19-20. The teams that advance from the super regionals to the final site — the Assembly Athletic Complex in Denver — will compete for the national championship from May 26-31.
