GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tusculum College softball team (1-2) split its season opener with Anderson University (3-3) on Wednesday at J.C. "Red" Edmonds Field. Anderson won the first game 1-0, while Tusculum claimed a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. The first game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Anderson's Kayla Thrasher doubled to right center field, driving in Maranda Sialmas for what proved to be the game winning run. Thrasher led the Lady Trojans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ashley Rogers notched the shutout for the Lady Trojans, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings. Kassie Killion took the loss for TC, allowing one unearned run on five hits with no walks over seven innings. She struck out two batters. The bats came alive in the nightcap, with 17 hits between the two squads. Anderson got on the board first with two runs in the second inning. Melissa Waters led off the inning with a double to right center. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Hendricks. Stephanie Griffis then laid a bunt down the first base line, which was mishandled by TC catcher Makenzie Loy. Pioneer pitcher Megan DuBois gathered the bobbled ball but overthrew first base, allowing Griffis to wheel to third base and Waters to score. Fallon Downs then drove Griffis home with a triple to right field. Both teams tallied a run in the third. Anderson pulled ahead 3-0 when Sialmas drove in Allison Cromer with a double. The Pioneers sliced their deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the frame when Griffin grounded to second, allowing Jenica Fernandez to score. Tusculum sealed the game with a six-run fourth inning. The scoring spree began with an RBI double by Cortney Schwartz. Fernandez doubled to left center to drive in Nicole Ringwall and Schwartz, giving Tusculum its first lead of the game at 4-3. Griffin added insurance with a three-run homer over the centerfield fence, cementing what would ultimately be a 7-3 Pioneer victory. Griffin led the Pioneers in the contest, going 1-for-4 with four RBI. Fernandez was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Monica Funigiello picked up the win in five innings of relief, allowing no runs on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Seven Lady Trojans picked up one hit in the game, with three driving in runs. Griffis took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and three walks. She struck out four batters. 2006 Anderson University Softball Statistics
