Softball Team Smashes School Home Run Record

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Before the season started, Anderson head softball coach Tommy Hewitt thought his team could hit 20 home runs. He never dreamed the Lady Trojans would hit 49, 40 more than any Anderson softball team had ever hit in a single season. "If a player has a good swing, we don't change a thing . . . we just tweek the swing," Hewitt said. "If the player doesn't have a good swing, we break it down and create a new swing." According to the Apr. 30 NCAA Division II statistics, Anderson is 17th in the country in home runs per game (0.94) and Anderson freshman catcher Kayla Williams is seventh in home runs per game (0.36). Williams, an All-CVAC first-team selection, ended the season with 17 home runs. "I thought Kayla Williams would hit seven or eight and Kayla Thrasher would hit seven or eight," Hewitt said. "They combined for 27. We had three freshmen hit three or more home runs. It was a real thrill to see a player who had never hit a home run in high school hit a home run in a college game." How did Hewitt turn the Lady Trojans into nationally ranked sluggers? "I attribute the increase in home runs to our work ethic and our players' willingness to listen," he said. "We work on foot, elbow, head, and hand position. A lot of players don't understand how important their head position is to their ability to make a powerful swing."
