ANDERSON, S.C. -- Stephanie Griffis retired 20 of the final 23 batters she faced and Rachelle Lawrence reached base four times and scored two runs to lead Anderson College to a 4-2 victory over Belmont Abbey and a split of a CVAC doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Smethers Field. The victory in the second game snapped Anderson's nine-game losing streak and improved the Lady Trojans' record to 14-31 overall and 7-5 in the CVAC. Five of the nine losses during the streak were by two runs or less and four were by one run. In the first game, Leigh Carter hit a three-run homer, Stefanie Spink hit a solo homer and Belmont Abbey (15-21-1, 5-3) turned a triple play to beat Anderson, 4-2. After allowing a single by Jessica Inman and a home run by Leigh Carter to start the game, Griffis retired 18 of the next 19 she faced. Griffis gave up a walk and a single in the seventh. Griffis, a sophomore from Pendleton, S.C., allowed just four hits and struck out four. Anderson rallied from the early 2-0 deficit with single runs in the first and second and two runs in the third. Kristen Price had an RBI single in the first, Griffis tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the second, and Lawrence and Maranda Passmore had one RBI apiece in the third. In the first game, Carter's three-run homer in the top of the third gave the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. After Anderson used three errors and a fielder's choice to scratch out a single run in the fifth, Spink led off the Belmont Abbey sixth with shot over the left field fence. In the home half of the sixth, Lawrence led off with a single and stole second. After Carolyn Smith walked, Price delivered a pinch-hit single to score Lawrence and cut the Belmont Abbey lead to 4-2. The Anderson rally continued with Elyse Hall reached on an error to load the bases, but the rally died when Melissa Waters lined out to Belmont Abbey third baseman Monica Halligan, who threw to first to double off Hall for the second out then took a throw from Spink to complete the triple play. Belmont Abbey pitcher Shallyn Duffy scattered seven hits, struck out four, and walked one to record the victory in the first game. Anderson College Softball Season Statistics
