Anderson, Lander Split Doubleheader

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Amber Yarborough had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in two runs to lead Lander to a 4-1 victory in the second game and a split of a doubleheader with Anderson College Sunday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Rachelle Lawrence rapped a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth to give Anderson a 4-3 victory. Lander started the second game with a single run in the first on an RBI single by Colleen Leggieri and two runs in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by Yarborough and Ashlea Burdette. Anderson scored its lone run in the first on a an RBI single by Fallon Downs. Lander pitcher Jenna Kellett went the distance in the second game. She scattered eight hits, struck out two and walked three to earn the victory. Both teams stranded 10 runners in the second game. Crump and Carolyn Smith had two hits apiece for Anderson in the second game. Lander jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game on two-out, two-run double by Keri Davis. Anderson answered with two runs in the second. Smith doubled to score Lawrence, who had reached on a single, then stole third and scored on a throwing error. Melissa Ryals gave Lander a 3-2 lead in the third with an RBI single. In the fifth, Anderson scored what provided to be the winning run against Lander reliever Austin Murray. With one out, Jessica Hoffman reached on a single and Maranda Passmore reached on a fielding error. After a fielder's choice cut down Hoffman at third and put Kristen Price at third, Smith hit the bottom of the center field fence to score Passmore and Price. Anderson's Ashley Rogers went the distance in the first game to pick up the victory. She allowed five hits, struck out two, and walked one.
