Kennesaw State Takes Two From AC Softball Team

KENNESAW, Ga. -- All-American first baseman Keri McKee extended her hitting streak to 13 games to lead No. 4 Kennesaw State to a doubleheader sweep of Anderson College for the Owls' 13th straight victory Thursday night at the Bobby Bailey Complex. Kennesaw State rallied to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the opener to take a 2-1 victory, and pitcher Janet Kearns scattered five hits in the nightcap for a 7-1 KSU win. McKee had a homer to start the rally in the first game in the bottom of the sixth, and the Owls pushed across another run with two outs in the inning. Megan Gant drew a walk, and Kelley Cowart doubled to left to bring in Courtney Matiak, who was running for Gant. McKee now has six homers and 41 RBIs on the season as the Owls improve to 25-4 on the season. That was enough run support for Brittany Matthews, who won her eighth-straight decision to improve to 12-1 on the year. Matthews scattered four hits and struck out four for the victory. McKee was 2-for-3 at the plate for KSU. Carolyn Smith drove in Anderson's lone run, singling in Cindy Crosby in the top of the first inning. In the nightcap, Kearns struck out six, and the Owls strung together seven hits and took advantage of a pair of Lady Trojan errors. KSU scored three runs in the bottom of the second with Lori Cassell getting the big hit in the inning, driving in a pair of runs with a two-out single to center. In the third, KSU scored a two-out run on an RBI single by Lauren Rutledge that brought in Jennifer Nolan. Amy Middleton and McKee each had RBI singles in the fourth inning to stretch the KSU lead to 6-0, and the Owls added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Kate Winstel. Lori Cassell and Jen Hunt each singled to extend their hitting streaks to five games. The two losses drop Anderson to 12-25. Release Courtesy of Kennesaw State SID
