Upstate Sweeps AC Softball Team

ANDERSON, S.C. -- USC Upstate received a strong relief performance from Jennifer Whited in the first game and took advantage of some erratic fielding by the Lady Trojans in the second game to sweep a doubleheader from Anderson Wednesday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Upstate rallied to take a 5-1 victory. Anderson took a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI single by Cindy Crosby. But after Maranda Passmore singled, Whited entered the game and blanked Anderson the rest of the way. In 4 1/3 innings, Whited allowed no runs, two hits, and walked just one. Upstate took the lead with a three-run fourth. The big hits in the inning were an RBI double by Tiffany Pitcher and a two-run double by pinch-hitter Jessica Hull. The Spartans scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to increase their lead to 5-1. Pitcher, who was 2-for-3, was the only Upstate player with multiple hits in the first game. In the second game, Upstate used four Anderson errors to score four unearned runs on its way to a 6-2 victory. The Spartans scored two runs in the second on two infield errors and a triple by Shay Slater. Upstate increased its lead to 4-0 in the third on an RBI single by Ashleigh Beck and an RBI ground out by Brittany Shetley. Upstate pitcher Jessica Jolly did not allow a hit in the first three innings, but Anderson broke through in the fourth. After Passmore reached on a fielder's choice, Rachelle Lawrence doubled, Kristen Price singled to score Passmore, and Fallon Downs flied out to score Lawrence. After Downs flied out, Jolly retired 10 of the last 11 she faced. In the seventh, two more infield errors and a triple by Jena Keith gave the Spartans two insurance runs. Upstate improves to 4-2, while Anderson falls to 5-11. AC Softball Season Statistics
