Cross Country to Compete at NCAA Regionals

ANDERSON, S.C. - Coming off strong showings at the South Atlantic Conference Championships two weeks ago, the Anderson University men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the 2014 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Montevallo on Saturday, November 22, at the University of Montevallo Cross Country Course in Montevallo, Ala.

The men's 10K is slated to start at 10:30 a.m., while the women's 6K starts at 11:45 a.m.

In addition to the Trojans, the teams racing on the men's side include GRU Augusta, Armstrong, Barton, Belmont Abbey, Brevard, Carson-Newman, Catawba, Clayton State, Coker, Columbus State, Flagler, Francis Marion, Georgia College, King, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Lincoln Memorial, Mars Hill, Montevallo, Mount Olive, North Greenville, Pfeiffer, Queens, Tusculum, UNC Pembroke, Wingate and Young Harris.

For the women, teams include GRU Augusta, Anderson, Barton, Belmont Abbey, Brevard, Carson-Newman, Catawba, Clayton State, Coker, Converse, Columbus State, Erskine, Flagler, Francis Marion, Georgia College, Georgia Southwestern State, King, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Lincoln Memorial, Mars Hill, Montevallo, Mount Olive, North Georgia, Pfeiffer, Queens, USC Aiken, Tusculum, UNC Pembroke, Wingate and Young Harris.

The Trojan women captured third at the SAC Championships, with freshman Haylee Love posting her second-best time of the year to finish eighth and claim conference freshman of the year and Second-Team All-SAC honors in the process. Fellow freshman Alex Dixon crossed the line in 10th place, collecting Second-Team All-Conference and All-Freshman Team accolades.

Sophomore Olivia Gardner recovered from a fall mid-race well enough to earn Second-Team All-Conference accolades by finishing 14th, while sophomores Bari Robinson and Mia Swiersz finished 26th and 34th, respectively. Fellow sophomore Amber Worthy crossed the line in 38th. Freshman Taylor Morris, sophomore Grace Gerlock and freshman Allison Halperin collectively finished in a group, in 54th, 55th and 56th, respectively. Devan Fisher rounded out the Trojan contingent in 86th.

Last year, the women's team finished 14th at the Southeast Regionals behind Gardner's 44th-place effort. Gardner crossed the line in a time of 23:41.9, while Sydney Hazel placed 47th. Robinson earned 75th a year ago and Worthy placed 108th. Gerlock crossed the line in 142nd and Fisher was just behind in 144th.

The men's team placed fifth at the 2014 SAC Championships, with freshman Mason Hazel posting a season-best effort to pace AU. The Summerville, S.C. native trimmed more than 16 seconds off his previous personal-best and crossed the line in ninth place. His effort garnered a spot on both the SAC All-Freshman team and the Second-Team All-Conference squad, as he became the first Trojan runner to capture SAC All-Freshman accolades since 2010.

Graduate student Westley Wilson finished 21st, while sophomore Ben Boerma placed 33rd and fellow sophomore Ned Kennedy crossed the line in 48th. Sophomores Jesse Patrick and Michael Burch claimed 51st and 63rd, respectively. Senior Joshua Visi-Clark finished 65th.

The men placed 17th at last year's NCAA Regional in Charlotte, N.C., with Boerma finishing 70th. Wilson was two spots further back in 86th, while Kennedy claimed 107th. Patrick and Burch claimed 109th and 147th, respectively.
