Men's Soccer Defeats Newberry 2-1 For Fifth Straight Win

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team picked up their fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday (Oct. 13) with a 2-1 win on the road at the Newberry College Wolves.

In their previous match, the Trojans defeated Carson-Newman 2-1 in a thrilling double-overtime contest, winning on a golden goal from Bar Galanti. Previously, the Trojans won three of the four games in the last homestand, including wins over Queens, Tusculum, and Erskine.

It was a scoreless for a majority of the first half as both teams were struggling to get into a rhythm. That ended in the 40th minute when Alexandre Cox-Ashwood escaped the Newberry defense, and fired a 30-yard strike outside the left corner of the box into the back of the net, assisted by Harry Ward.

Midway through the second half, Anderson was able to pad the lead when Agustin Ortiz scored his third goal of the season, as he fired a shot into the lower right corner of the net.

However, Newberry answered back in the 84th minute to trim the deficit. Just a few moments later, the Wolves were on the brink of tying the match when Tre Bonaparte fired a shot on goal, but goalkeeper Gal Elyashiv made an outstanding diving save to preserve the lead as the Trojans went on to win by a score of 2-1.

Elyashiv finished the match with four saves. As a team, Anderson outshot Newberry 13 to 11, and had the advantage in corner kicks eight to five.

The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 16) as they play host to the Wingate Bulldogs. Game time is set for 7:30 PM, with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
