Men's Soccer Defeats Mount Olive 3-2 For First Win of Season

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2021 fall season with a 3-2 road victory at Mount Olive on Wednesday (Sept. 8).

After a nearly two-hour weather delay, the Trojans kicked off the season with a road contest at Mount Olive. Anderson was able to get on the scoreboard early as Alexandre Cox-Ashwood found the back of the net in the 18th minute. Later in the half at the 39th minute, Cox-Ashwood scored his second goal of the evening to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead, courtesy of an assist from Mariano Carpena.

Mount Olive climbed back into the match in the second half with a goal in the 69th minute. However, Anderson answered right back as Eloy Allimadi set up Harry Ward for the score to give the Trojans their third goal of the night, propelling the team to the 3-2 victory.

Anderson outshot Mount Olive 16 to seven for the match, with eight of them being on goal. They also had the advantage in corner kicks, nine to four. Gal Elyashiv started for the Trojans and earned the goalie decision win. Neko Crist relieved Elyashiv in the second half and picked up a save in 16 minutes played in goal.

"It is always great to start the season with a win," said coach Michael Zion. "This was a difficult road trip with the rain delay and a challenging Mount Olive squad. We will learn from this game and look to take another step forward in our match on Saturday."

The Trojans will continue their season on Saturday (Sept. 11) as they play host to Lander University. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM, with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
