Men's Soccer Wins Double OT Thriller at Carson-Newman

Men's Soccer Wins Double OT Thriller at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Anderson University men's soccer team won their fourth straight game on Saturday (Oct. 9) with a 2-1 double overtime win over South Atlantic Conference foe Carson-Newman.

Something had to give tonight on the pitch in Jefferson City, as both Anderson and Carson-Newman entered the match with winning streaks. Three in a row for the Trojans, and seven for the Eagles, five of which coming in SAC play.

It was a scoreless first half of play, headlined by stellar defensive play from both goalkeepers. Gal Elyashiv totaled four saves on the night for Anderson, while reigning SAC Astroturf Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Bram Kaarsgaren finished the game with nine saves.

Carson-Newman got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute when Harry Whitehead scored his third goal of the season on a rebound off a cross. However, Anderson responded quickly in the 70th minute when Yani Diagne assisted Alexandre Cox-Ashwood for a goal off a breakaway to even the score. Both defenses held strong for the remainder of regulation as the game went into overtime.

Three minutes into the second overtime period, Anderson was awarded a corner kick. After a header and a deflection, Bar Galanti was in the right place at the right time to power a shot into the back of the net to clinch the victory for the Trojans.

Anderson's offensive attack was persistent tonight, outshooting Carson-Newman 23 to 14, with an 11 to five shots on goal advantage. They also had the advantage in corner kicks 13 to six.

"I am proud of how the team competed tonight," said coach Michael Zion. "We went down a goal with 30 minutes to play and had to fight our way back into it. Once we pulled it back to 1-1, the boys did not let up. Great win for the team and program!"

The Trojans will be back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 13) when they travel to Newberry, S.C. to take on the Wolves. Game time is set for 7:30 P.M., with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
