Wasps Outslug Trojans in Series Opener

ANDERSON, S.C. – Using an eight-run fourth inning, Emory & Henry opened a three-game weekend series by outlasting Anderson, 13-8, in nonconference baseball action, Friday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 2-3 with its third setback in four outings, while Emory & Henry improved to 2-3 with its second win in three decisions.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Grad student Jordan Montgomery was 2-for-5 on the afternoon, with an RBI-single and his first home run of the season – a solo shot to right field in the third inning. He also reached on an error in the ninth. Senior Justin Fox was also 2-for-5, with a single and his second double of the season in the second inning. He crossed the plate once and drove in a run. Junior JC LeGrand added a single and scored a run in two at-bats, while junior Jackson Van Ness posted a two-run triple and reached base on a walk. Freshman Braeden Harrison reached base on an error and on a wild pitch and scored both times.

PITCHERS
Junior right-hander Graham Brown (1-1) absorbed the loss after allowing 10 runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings of work on the mound. He struck out five Wasps and walked three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Emory & Henry batted around and scored four runs in the top of the first inning, while the Trojans answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and knotted the score with two unearned runs in the second inning.

AU continued the comeback by added three runs in the bottom of the third inning and jumping out to a 7-4 lead. Montgomery clubbed his first homer of the season with one out and two batters later, James Hanvey reached on a two-out walk. He moved into scoring position when Harrison struck out but was able to reach base when the E&H catcher was unable to corral the third strike. Both runners crossed the plate when Van Ness laced his triple into the gap in left-center.

But the Trojan lead was brief, as the Wasps countered by sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Trailing, 12-7, the Trojans plated a run in the bottom of the fourth and neither team managed to score until E&H set the final score with a run in the ninth.
