Pair of Big Innings Carry Belmont Abbey Past Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson baseball team opened a four-game homestand by suffering its second straight setback, 13-5, to Belmont Abbey in nonconference action, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 9-6, while Belmont Abbey (6-10) won its second straight outing and its third in four decisions.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Junior Chandler Castleberry was 2-for-4 on the day, with a first-inning home run and also ripped a two-out, run-scoring triple in the third inning. He was also hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. Sophomore Jacob Kohns added two singles and a walk in five trips to the plate, with senior Dillon Carpenter notching a single and a walk.

Freshman left-hander Ethan Stalnecker (1-2) drew the start and suffered the loss after surrendering six runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings of work on the mound. He walked two batters and struck out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Castleberry gave the Trojans an early 1-0 lead when he belted his third homer of the season - a two-out shot well beyond the fence in left-center – in the bottom of the first.

But the Crusaders responded by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, with AU evening the score on Castleberry's two-out, opposite-field run-scoring triple to right in the third frame.

Belmont Abbey then erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth, with AU posting an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and closing the gap to within 6-5 with two runs in the fifth. The Crusaders broke the game open by scoring two in the eighth and five more in the ninth, while the Trojan bats were largely silent over the final four innings.
