Trojans Fall to Emmanuel at Memorial Stadium

ANDERSON, S.C. – After trailing by six runs late, the Anderson baseball team climbed within three after eight innings, but fell, 8-5, to Emmanuel, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

"It was a disappointing loss tonight at home," said Anderson head coach PJ Zocchi. "We weren't able to make some adjustments in the middle innings of the game and really didn't put any pressure on their pitchers until the late innings. We have to execute at a higher level on both sides of the ball in order to achieve our goals."

Anderson slipped to 3-2 on the season, while Emmanuel improved to 1-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior Dillon Carpenter notched three singles in five trips to the plate and drove in a pair of runs. Junior Nick Vella was 2-for-4, with a double and a single and also reached on a walk. Sophomore Jacob Kohns was 2-for-5, with two singles on the afternoon.

Freshman Ethan Stalnecker (1-1) absorbed the loss after surrendering four runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. The left-hander struck out two and walked two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Carpenter beat out an infield hit with two outs in the bottom of the third to plate Vella from second base for the game's first run, but the Lions responded with two runs in the each of the next three innings to claim a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Carpenter led off the home half of the sixth with another infield single and crossed the plate when Trevor Weisner bounced out to the right side with one out.

Emmanuel built an 8-2 advantage with two more runs in the top of the seventh, while AU closed within five by plating another run in the bottom of the frame. The Trojans added another two runs in the eighth to get within striking distance and had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the ninth, but were unable to capitalize.

STAT OF THE DAY
The two teams combined to commit seven errors on the soggy afternoon.
