Baseball Hosts Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday for Senior Day

ANDERSON, S.C. - With the South Atlantic Conference Tournament on the horizon, Anderson University baseball closes its regular season on Tuesday when it welcomes in-state rival Southern Wesleyan to Memorial Stadium for the second time this season, as the program will celebrate its Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Trojans
Following a two-game sweep of SAC rival Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, AU snapped a four-game losing stretch and improved to 20-27 for the season. In addition to the 20 overall wins this season, 14 triumphs came from within the conference, marking the most by the program since joining the SAC prior to the 2011 season. With the 14 league wins, Anderson earned a berth into the SAC Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Headlining the team's offense over the weekend was leftfielder Garrett Bernardo who was 4-for-7 in the series with the Railsplitters, including a 3-for-3 performance in the opener. With the four hits, Garrett Bernardo tallied a RBI, while scoring twice, as both runs came off the bat of brother, Nick Bernardo, highlighted by a walk-off single to give Anderson a 2-1 win in the series finale.

Senior shortstop Brett Cash tallied a pair of hits for the series, as both knocks were for extra bases with a double and a run-scoring triple. With his double in the final game of day, Cash joins teammate LJ Newman with 10 or more doubles on the season. Newman leads the team with 17, while Cash cracked double figures with 10.

On the mound, the Trojans used four pitchers for the two-game series, as left-handed starter Nick Contafio shined in the opener with seven productive innings and four strikeouts in the winning effort. Following Contafio, right-hander Mitchell Cooksey closed the door on LMU to preserve the 4-1 victory. In the final game of the day, right-hander Chris Ayers tossed 5.2 innings in his second start of the year and struck out two LMU hitters. Reliever JT Trujillo, who earned the win, finished the game and did not allow a hit.

The Warriors
In its first season as Conference Carolinas members, Southern Wesleyan failed to advance into the postseason, as it comes into Monday's contest with a 14-32 overall record with a 6-21 mark in the league. Most recently, the Warriors were swept in their final conference series of the season by King, as they were outscored by the Tornado, 46-17, for the set.

In the three previous meetings between the teams this season, SWU's Johnny Ponder and Josh Shimp are hitting .500 against Trojan pitching. The tandem combines for nine singles, despite AU out-hitting the Warriors in the season-long series, 36-23.

On the mound, Anderson has run into problems against Southern Wesleyan's Mike Batten, as the freshman right-hander has 10 strikeouts in his two appearances against the Black and Gold. Batten earned the start in the March 18 matchup and tossed five complete while striking out six AU hitters, but was tabbed with the loss.

The Series
Anderson is 2-1 against SWU this season, as it claimed a 7-5 win at Memorial Stadium on March 11 and a 12-6 victory in Central on March 18. The Warriors bounced back with an 8-3 triumph in Central on April 8, marking their first win over the Black and Gold since April 15, 2013.
