Baseball Suffers a Pair of Setbacks to Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Despite totaling 13 hits for the afternoon, Anderson University baseball managed just three runs for the day in the series-ending doubleheader at Newberry, as the Trojans dropped two, 4-1 and 6-2, Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

With the pair of setbacks, the Black and Gold fall to 1-4 on the young season after claiming the series opener on Friday. The Wolves improve to 3-2 on the year, as both teams began their conference schedules this weekend.

Leading the Trojan offense was middle infielder Brett Cash, as the senior finished 4-for-7 at the plate with four singles and two runs scored for the doubleheader. Freshman third baseball Tyler Miller followed the fellow infielder with three hits, including a double in the first contest of the day. Junior catcher LJ Newman added two hits, while Garrett Bernardo posted the team's second double in the final game of the day.

In the opening game, the teams played to five scoreless innings until Newbery broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Anderson answered in the top of the seventh with a run and the Trojan bullpen blanked the Wolf lineup, but it was not enough as Newberry captured its first conference victory of the season.

Anderson tried to claim the series in the seven-inning game, but a three-run third inning by the home side proved to be the difference. Cash and Travis Smith led off the fourth inning with a pair of singles and eventually came around to score for Anderson's first runs of the day.

Facing the 3-2 deficit, Newberry added to its lead with three runs in the sixth to seal the contest. NC starter, Cole Cromer, went the distance with two earned runs and four strikeouts. On the opposite end, Trojan starter Cody Sheffield tossed 4.1 innings and struck out five Newberry hitters. For Sheffield, the start was his first of his collegiate career.

Anderson returns to the field on Tuesday for its home opener against nonconference opponent, Limestone. First pitch from Anderson Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
