Baseball Drops Two to Catawba on Saturday

ANDERSON, S.C. - Managing just a combined five runs for the doubleheader, Anderson University baseball suffered a pair of setbacks to league-leading Catawba in the final two games of a South Atlantic Conference series, falling 9-1 and 13-4, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

After dropping all three contests to the Indians this weekend, the Trojans fall to 14-13 on the season with an even 9-9 record in the conference, while Catawba improves its winning streak to 12 straight games and moves to 23-4 on the season with a 14-3 record in the SAC.

Offensively, the junior tandem of first baseman Steven Cooper and outfielder Garrett Bernardo tallied three hits apiece for the day, including a pair of two-hit performances. In the opening game, Bernardo finished 2-for-3 with AU's only run scored, as he smacked the Trojans' only extra-base hit of the game with an eighth-inning double. Cooper finished 2-for-4 in the second game and scored his 20th run of the season.

Bernardo was joined by freshman third baseman Tyler Miller with a pair of hits in the opener, as the Trojans managed just six hits in the 9-1 setback. In the final contest of the day, Cooper and outfielder Stephen McKnight posted two-hit games, as McKnight headlined his afternoon at the plate with a two-run double in the third inning.

Senior shortstop Brett Cash added a hit in both meetings, as he increases his hitting streak to eight straight games. The senior also scored one of Anderson's four runs in the second game of the afternoon.

The middle of the Catawba lineup shined throughout the three-game series, as Will Albertson finished the weekend 9-for-12 with two home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored. Teammate T.J. Wharton, who batted clean-up following Albertson, followed by finishing the series with an 8-for-16 performance with eight RBI and four runs scored.

As a team, Catawba recorded 47 hits and scored 42 runs in the three games, as the visitors managed 17 extra-base hits for the series.

Anderson looks to get back on the winning track on Tuesday when it hits the road to Newberry for a rare nonconference contest with the Wolves. First pitch from the Smith Road Complex is slated for 6 p.m.
