Baseball Suffers Two Setbacks to Erskine on Wednesday

Baseball Suffers Two Setbacks to Erskine on Wednesday

ANDERSON, S.C. - Despite out-hitting Erskine for the two games of the doubleheader, Anderson University baseball came up short in both contests, as the Trojans dropped to archrival Erskine, 10-5 and 9-6, Wednesday evening at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

With the pair of setbacks, AU falls to 15-19 on the season, while the Flying Fleet sweeps the season-long series with a trio of wins this year and improves to 29-6 overall.

The Trojans recorded 25 hits for the twin bill, out-hitting the visitors by one, but was out-scored by a combined eight runs. Four different Trojans totaled three hits for the afternoon, as senior Brett Cash, junior LJ Newman and freshmen Ryan Flynn and Tyler Miller all tallied multi-hit games, headlined by Newman's fifth homer run of the season in the opening game of the day. Miller also shined at the plate with Anderson's only three-hit game of the afternoon, finishing 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored in the final contest.

Within the four Trojans, Cash was the only player to record an extra-base hit with a double in the final game of the day. Cash joined Newman and sophomore Matthew Powell, who pounded a double in the opening game, as the three Trojans to record extra-base hits on the day. For Powell, the double was his first extra-base knock on the season.

Erskine started strongly in both games, as it opened the doubleheader's scoring with five runs in the top of the second and continued its attack throughout the game with 10 runs for the matchup. In the final game, the Fleet crossed three runs in the top of the first to propel them to nine total runs for the seven-inning game.

Zach Smith led the EC offense with five total hits on the day, including a combined five RBI and a run scored. Smith highlighted his day with a two-run homer in the second game, marking his 11th blast of the season. For the day, the Fleet knocked three home runs, as Hanlon Maivelett and Brandon Wooten raised their home run totals on the season.

Anderson returns to the diamond on Friday when it hosts South Atlantic Conference rival Brevard for a doubleheader. First pitch on Friday is set for 1 p.m. with the series concluding on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.
