Baseball Splits with Wingate, Captures the Series Win

ANDERSON, S.C. - After dropping the opening game of the doubleheader, 11-6, Anderson University baseball bounced back in the rubber game and captured a key South Atlantic Conference series over Wingate, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

With the split, the Trojans moved to 13-10 on the season with a 9-8 mark in the conference, as they have won four of their last five games. The series win over the Bulldogs marks AU's first over Wingate (16-8, 10-8 SAC) since joining the conference prior to the start of the 2011 campaign.

Leading the Anderson offense on the day was junior second baseman Kyle Bailey with two hits in both games on the day, as all four hits were singles. Recording an RBI single in the final game of the day, Bailey added a pair of RBI and a run scored to close the afternoon. Redshirt junior Travis Smith posted three hits for the doubleheader, headlined by a two-hit performance in the final game of the day. Smith headlined the 7-6 win with a two-run double in the fifth inning that evened the score at 6-6.

Five other Trojans posted a hit in each game, as the Black and Gold totaled nine extra-base hits against Wingate pitching. Shortstop Brett Cash, catcher and designated hitter LJ Newman and Nick Bernardo notched extra-base hits in both games, highlighted by Bernardo's triple in the opening contest.

In the final game of the day, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-3 lead through 4.5 innings. As the game moved into the bottom of the fifth, Anderson crossed three runs to even up the score, as Cash brought home Cooper with a double to right field, followed by Smith's two-run double.

Anderson captured the eventual go-ahead run when freshman third baseman Tyler Miller scored on a WU error to seal the victory.

Right-handed reliever Chris Ayers closed the door on the Bulldogs, as he tossed three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. The right-hander struck out two Wingate hitters and faced just 11, as he picked up his first victory of the season.

Anderson returns to its nonconference schedule on Tuesday when it hits the road to Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday. First pitch from Central, S.C. is set for 6 p.m.
