ANDERSON, S.C. - After freshman Lyssa Engle evened the score at 1-1 early in the second half, Anderson University women's soccer were unable to keep up with South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum, as the Trojans fell 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.

With the setback, AU drops to an even 4-4-1 overall record and a 2-2-1 mark in conference play, while its counterparts, TC, improves to 7-3-1 on the season and a 3-1 mark for league play. The loss also snaps a consecutive point streak after Anderson entered the weekend winners of two of its last three with a draw in the middle of the triumphs.

Engle continued her scoring streak in the 64th minute of action, as the freshman has now scored Anderson's last six goals after tallying five a week ago. The Fairborn, Ohio native has now scored nine goals on the year, while she also paced the Anderson offense for the day with four shots with three coming on goal.

Classmate Maddie Volz followed Engle with three shots with two coming on goal, while junior Faith Johannes and sophomores Jaclyn Kubiak and Paige Gowans-Smith each posted a shot. For the match, the Black and Gold totaled 10 shots with seven troubling the opposing goalkeeper.

On the opposite side, the Pioneers finished the contests with 15 shots with 11 on goal as Anderson goalkeeper, sophomore Sadie Lancaster, corralled six saves. Unable to complete the match due to injury, everyday defender, Johannes, moved into the goalkeeping role and made her first collegiate save in the final five minutes of play.

After a scoreless first half, the visitors found the back of the net first in the 63rd minute. TC's leading goal scorer, Taylor Lewis, found herself in the assist category when she flicked a pass to teammte Jordan Newby for the match's opening goal. With the goal, Newby, who came off the Pioneer bench, scored her first goal of the season.

Engle and the Trojans quickly responded a minute later as she is quickly becoming the first Trojan in over four years to record double figure goals on the season. After Anderson was awarded a free kick 10 yards from the midfield stripe, Johannes played a long, arching pass down the field and into the wind and found Engle along the left side. Engle brought the ball to her feet and beat TC goalkeeper Marissa Williams to her left to even the score at 1-1. The long ball was Johannes' first assist of the year.

"With 20 minutes to go, we were on the ascendency at 1-1," Anderson head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "We felt we needed to get a second goal to give us that extra energy to finish the match."

After AU tied the contest, Tusculum clawed back with a 78th goal from the penalty spot. Midfielder Nikki Arthur connected on the only penalty kick given up by Anderson this season, as the goal was the eventual game-winner for the Pioneers.

"The momentum shifted with the penalty decision and we struggled from there on out," Traquair said. "It's unfortunate, but some real lessons are to be learned for us as a group and staff. The match got away from us today in the final stages and I was disappointed with the scoreline."

TC closed out the contest with two more goals as forward Shannele Sunderland added her third of the season in the 79th minute and Lewis continued to be TC's leading scorer with her fourth in the 86th minute.

In goal, Williams earned her third win of the season, matching Lancaster's total of six saves for the afternoon.

Anderson looks to get back into the win column on Wednesday as it travels to in-state rival Newberry. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
