ANDERSON, S.C. - Despite back-to-back shutout victories to begin the 2014 season, Anderson University women's soccer has dropped two straight matches and looks to get back on the winning track on Wednesday evening at nonconference opponent Georgia College. Kickoff from Milledgeville is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Trojans
After outscoring its opponents 4-0 in the opening two matches this
season, Anderson has been held without a goal in its last two
contests while totaling 18 shots in the scoreless streak. Despite
the 2-2 record to start to the year, the Trojans did not find a win
until the middle of September last season and started the year
0-2-1.
Freshman Rachael Whaling continues to lead the Black and Gold in goals scored after scoring twice in her collegiate debut against Southern Wesleyan. Fellow newcomers Maddie Volz and Mariana Poveda have also scored this season as they propelled Anderson to a 2-0 win at North Greenville. Poveda and Volz currently lead the squad in shots with 15 and 11, respectively.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sadie Lancaster earned two shutouts to
begin the season, but has dropped her last two decisions against
Florida Southern and nationally-ranked Catawba. On the year,
Lancaster has posted seven saves.
The Bobcats
Georgia College found the win column for the first time on Sunday
when it knocked off in-state opponent West Georgia on the final day
of the 2014 Bobcat Shootout. Two days prior to the win, GC opened
the Shootout with its first draw of the season, tying with North
Alabama, 1-1. Prior to the draw, the Bobcats fell on the road to
Florida Southern, 3-0, and nationally-ranked Rollins, 5-0.
Sophomore Sol Baldassini is the lone Georgia College player with multi-goals scored and double figure shots as she leads the club with two goals scored and 10 shots on the year. Despite holding the team-lead in the category, both of Baldassini's goals came in the 3-0 shutout win over West Georgia on Sunday. Senior Rebekah Autry and junior Ally Barys also have goals for the season.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Annie Stephens has started in three matches and was in goal for GC's 3-0 win over West Georgia, as she claimed her first clean sheet of 2014. For the year, Stephens has nine saves in over 319 minutes of action.
The Series
Anderson and Georgia College will play for the third time in the
three years, as the Bobcats have captured wins in each of the last
two matches. Last season, GC earned a 2-0 triumph over the Black
and Gold at Trojan Stadium as the visitors tallied two first half
goals to clinch the nonconference victory.
