Softball Team Rallies Twice To Sweep SWU

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson University softball team rallied in both games to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Southern Wesleyan Tuesday afternoon in Smethers Field. In the first game, Anderson spotted Southern Wesleyan two runs in the top of the first inning and rallied for a 3-2 victory in eight innings. In the second game, Anderson wiped out a 2-0 deficit with a five-run sixth for a 5-2 victory. The sweep allows Anderson to close the regular season at 21-21. Jamie Johnson gave Southern Wesleyan a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game with a two-run homer to left. Anderson got one run back in the bottom of the first on a double by Meredith Knox, a single by Kayla Thrasher, and a ground out. Anderson tied the game at 2 in the third on a run-scoring single by Kayla Williams. Tied at 2 through seven innings, the game went to the international tiebreaker. After Southern Wesleyan failed to score, Anderson moved Kayla Thrasher to third with a bunt. After a walk, Mickie Brown laced a single to right for the game winner. In the second game, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by Melanie Massey. Southern Wesleyan generated another run in the third on a one-out single by Lauren Angel, a sacrifice bunt, and two wild pitches. Anderson, scoreless through five innings, sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth and pushed five runs across. The big hits in the inning were a two-run triple by Kinsley Durham and a run-scoring single by Lora Daniel. Katie Van Gieson (5-2) won both games in relief for Anderson. She pitched the final two innings of both games and allowed no runs, just two hits, and struck out three. Anderson's next action is Friday in the Conference Carolinas Tournament at Simpsonville. Anderson will face Pfeiffer at noon.
