Queens Cools Off Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Megan Campbell pitched 7.2 innings of scoreless relief to lead Queens University of Charlotte to a sweep of Anderson University in a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Queens scored five runs in the second inning and went on to post a 6-3 victory. In the second game, the Royals took a 2-1 lead in the fourth then added three insurance runs in the seventh for a 5-1 victory. Campbell entered the first game with two outs in the third and limited Anderson to two hits the rest of the way. She struck out six and walked just one. Campbell entered the second game in the fifth and allowed just two hits in the final three innings. Queens got all of the runs it needed in the first game in the second. Kari Kmetic and Brittany Stephens led off the inning with back-to-back home runs. Two singles and two Anderson errors produced three more runs. Anderson got three runs back in the bottom of the third on five consecutive singles. Kayla Williams, Kayla Thrasher, and Lora Daniel all had RBI singles in the inning. Queens was led in the first game by Kmetic and Ashley Bagwell, who both had two hits apiece. Lora Daniel had two hits for Anderson in the first game. The Royals had 10 hits in the first game to Anderson's 7. In the second game, Anderson took a 1-0 lead in the first. Meredith Knox walked, moved to second on a single by Kayla Williams, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kayla Thrasher. The Royals took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. They used two walks, a sacrifice, a wild pitch, and an RBI sinlge by Bagwell to push two runs across. Queens put the game away with three runs in the seventh. The big hits in the inning were an RBI single by Campbell and a two-run single by Mary Lee Giurintano. Amanda Bowman, Alisha Waldrop, and Campbell all had two hits apiece for Queens in the second game. Melissa Carmichael was the lone Anderson player with two hits. Queens outhit Anderson in the second game, 11-8. In the two games, Anderson left 17 runners on base. Anderson did not have an extra base hit in the two games. The sweep improves Queens to 8-19 overall and 4-6 in the conference. Anderson falls to 15-11, 7-3.
