BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey split its second-straight Conference Carolinas doubleheader, falling to visiting Anderson University 5-2 in game one before taking game two 2-1 in eight innings Wednesday afternoon. Anderson is now 19-17 overall and 10-8 in Conference Carolinas, while Belmont Abbey stands at 10-31, 4-12. In game one, Crusaders starting pitcher Carrie Markham set down the first ten batters before allowing a one-out single in the fourth, when the Trojans jumped ahead 1-0. Kayla Thrasher hit a single to left, moved to second on a throwing error, and scored on a single by Meredith Knox. The Crusaders surged ahead in the fifth by scoring a pair of runs. Candace Cady walked and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Desiree Carron, who reached on an error when the throw was dropped. Jessica Bennett tied the game at 1 on a single to left to Cady and move Carron to third. Carron scored on the next pitch when Brittany Memoli beat out an infield single. Anderson quickly regained the lead in the top of the sixth on one swing of the bat, as Lora Daniel ripped a three-run homer to right center to give the Lady Trojans a 4-2 lead. They would push another run across in the seventh to provide the winning margin. Casey Deer earned the win after allowing two unearned runs on four hits in five innings. Katie Van Giesen earned the save after giving up one hit over two scoreless innings. Markham took the loss. Game two was a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for just eight hits in the contest. The first run was not scored until the Crusaders plated one in the sixth. Memoli reached on a leadoff error and scored on a triple by Jessica Inman for the game's first run. Anderson responded with a manufactured run in the top of the seventh as Williams doubled, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kinsley Durham to tie the game at 1. After the Crusaders didn't score in the bottom half, the two teams went to extra innings using the International Tie-Breaker format. Anderson's Kasey King started the inning on second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt but was left stranded. The Abbey won the game in the bottom of the inning, as Markham was placed on second and moved to third on a passed ball. After a strikeout, Inman reached on a fielder's choice and Abby Threatt was walked to load the bases for Dani Beres, who brought home Markham with the winning run with a single to left field. Carron earned the win after allowing one run on four hits in a complete-game effort. After allowing a double with one out in the second, she retired 12 straight batters before yielding a single in the sixth. Van Giesen took the loss after allowing the winning run to score in the eighth.
