Softball Team Crushes Claflin

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson University softball team swept Claflin 27-2 and 22-0 in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Smethers Field. Anderson, 9-7 overall, opened the doubleheader by scoring 22 runs in the first inning. The Lady Trojans had 13 hits in the inning and benefited from four Claflin errors. The big hits in the inning were a grand slam by Kinsley Durham, a two-run homer by Mickie Brown, and a two-run double by Lora Daniel. Meredith Knox, Kayla Thrasher, and Kasey King all scored four runs apiece in the first game. Durham drove in seven runs with her grand slam, a two-run single and an RBI single. King finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBI. Anderson finished the first game with 20 hits. Three Anderson pitchers -- Samantha Moorhead, Alex Waldroup, and Katie Van Gieson combined for six strikeouts in five innings. The lone Claflin hit was a two-run homer by Tessa Brown in the fifth. In the second game, Anderson scored seven runs in the first inning, five in the third inning, and 10 in the fourth inning. Knox drove in six runs in the second game with an RBI double in the first and a grand slam home run in the fourth. Knox and Thrasher, who hit a solo home run in the fourth, scored four runs apiece. Three Anderson pitchers -- Donya Cobb, Casey Deer, and Waldroup -- combined to allow three hits in five innings. In four games against Claflin this season, Anderson outscored the Pantherettes, 85-9.
