ANDERSON, S.C. - After its six-match unbeaten streak fell on Saturday at the hands of Lincoln Memorial, Anderson University men's soccer looks to start a new winning streak on Tuesday, as the Trojans hit the road to Brevard. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
The Trojans
Despite the loss on Saturday, AU still remains in third place, but
is now tied with its most recent opponent, Lincoln Memorial, which
also has 13 points and a 4-3-1 conference record. Anderson holds a
better overall mark with a 9-3-2 record on the season, compared to
LMU's 7-5-1 overall mark. The duo is chasing conference leader
Queens, which is a perfect 8-0 and Wingate, which is 6-2. The
tandem is also getting pushed from behind, as Carson-Newman and
Mars Hill are tied for fifth place with 12 points apiece.
The setback on Saturday marks the first time AU has lost in regulation since Oct. 24, 2012 when the Trojans fell to Francis Marion, 2-1. Since the loss, all of AU's defeats have come in extra time, including its two from this season.
Redshirt sophomore Andre Carle continues to lead the team in goals with 10 on the year, which ranks third in the conference behind LMU's Mario Pinto and C-N's Ross Frame, who has tallied seven goals in his last five matches. In the assists category, Anderson has two players in the top five in the conference, as redshirt sophomore Henrique Gazzi is tied for second in the league with six and junior Mattias Schyberg is fourth is five on the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Bo Haug continues to impress as he is currently second in the conference with a 1.03 goals against average and fourth in total saves with 47. Haug has earned eight wins and three clean sheets and holds a .770 save percentage.
The Tornados
Brevard enters Tuesday's match with a 2-1 win over Catawba in its
last match. With the win, the Tornados move to 2-5 in league play,
giving them six points and moves BC into a tie for 10th place with
Tusculum in the SAC standings. Overall, Brevard is 4-8 for its 2013
campaign with wins over Tusculum, King and Erskine, along with its
most recent win over Catawba.
Freshman forward Ryan McPhillips has been responsible for 36-percent of BC's goals this season, totaling five for the year. McPhillips leads the team in all offensive categories, including 19 shots and 12 shots on goal. Classmate Rhem Stubbs is second on the team in goals with two.
Defensively, freshman Heath Turner has started in goal in 10 of Brevard's 12 matches. Turner is second in the SAC in saves with 55 and has one shutout on the year.
The Series
Anderson holds a 3-0 advantage over Brevard since AU joined the SAC
in 2010, as BC has yet to score on AU since both were conference
opponents. In last season's meeting, the Trojans cruised to a 3-0
victory as Lars Zimmerman led the way with two goals apiece.
Historically, this is the third time head coach John Murphy will face Brevard as he defeated then Brevard Community College, 2-0, when he was the head coach of Massasoit Community College.
