ANDERSON, S.C. - Coming off a convincing 6-2 victory over archrival Erskine on Thursday, Anderson University men's soccer continues its road stretch with a trip to Mount Olive on Sunday. Kickoff from Amon Field is set for 1 p.m.
Anderson
The youthful Trojan roster was on display Thursday night in Due West as all six of AU's goals were scored by newcomers to the roster, highlighted by junior Andre Carle's hat trick. The hat trick is the first by a Trojan player since Lasse Sohrweide scored three goals in a 4-1 win over Newberry in 2011. Overall, the six goals were the most scored by an Anderson team since a 6-0 win over USC Aiken in 2011. The victory marked the first season-opening win for AU since the 2009 season, when the Trojans knocked off Newberry 3-2.
Also finding the goal column was a trio of newcomers in Paul von Hinueber, Henrique Gazzi and Luke Jones as von Hinueber matched Carle's shot total with five. The experienced side of the starting lineup was not overshadowed as junior and returnee Mattias Schyberg tallied three assists on the evening, including two in the second half.
The victory over Erskine was not only Anderson's first victory of the season, it was the first point for AU in the Beville Cup. Anderson looks to retain the trophy after winning it back from Erskine after the 2012-13 season. The next point up for grabs will be the women's soccer match on Sept. 16 in Due West.
Mount Olive
MOC got off to a slow start in its season opener at Francis Marion, falling to the Patriots, 1-0. Despite the loss, the Trojans are projected to finish in the top half of Conference Carolinas, projected fourth in the annual Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll. Coming off a 3-0-2 record to close last season, Mount Olive looks to ride that momentum into the 2013 season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Aleksandar Drobac notched an impressive nine saves, but was unable to hold the shutout, seeing 21 shots for the match. MOC was only able to record three shots against the FMU backline that controlled the pace of the match.
Head Coach Godfrey Miller returns for his third year at the helm of the Trojans after posting a 7-8-4 overall record in 2012. Miller returns his entire backline from a season ago, along with eight letterwinners.
The Series
The Trojan clash rekindles on Sunday after not meeting since 2009 when both schools were members of Conference Carolinas. The last match between the schools came on Halloween night in 2009 as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
