GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Alex Merriman continued to the lead the Anderson men's golf team through the finish of the Tusculum Invitational, as the freshman finished with a team-best, two-day 3-over-par 145 to pace the Trojans to a ninth-place finish at the par 71, 6,733 yard Link Hills Country Club layout.
The host Pioneers (293-276=569) vaulted from fourth following
Saturday's first round to capture the team title by four shots over
Young Harris (281-292=573), which led after the opening round.
Lincoln Memorial (290-285=575) slipped one spot to third, with
Tiffin (291-286=577) claiming fourth. Mars Hill (298-282=580)
jumped from an eighth-place tie with Anderson to fifth, while
Milligan (297-288=585) took sixth place.
Brevard (297-294=591) finished seventh, while Tennessee Wesleyan
(295-298=593) was eighth and the Trojans (298-301=599) were six
shots further back in ninth. Marian (305-300=605) and Shorter
(305-300=605) shared 10th place, with Mars Hill (B) (305-302=607),
Lincoln Memorial (B) (311-299=610), Spartanburg Methodist
(309-310=619), Walters State (312-312=624), Bluefield State
(323-310=633), Virginia-Wise (318-320=638) and Urbana (325-334=659)
rounding out the 18-team field.
Eli Crumley of Young Harris fired a two-day 138 to win individual medalist honors by one shot over Tusculum's Nick Forsberg.
Merriman's two-day 145 placed him in 14th, with fellow freshman
Forrest Fowler (746-73=149) moving from a tie for 36th to sharing
28th after Sunday's final round. Sophomore Payton Whitlock
(77-75=152) claimed a share of 46th, while David Wachter carded a
two-day 157 and finished in a tie for 56th. Rob Warren (79-78=157)
rounded out the Trojan contingent in a tie for 65th.
The Trojans are scheduled to get back on the links on March 23-24
at the Cliffs Intercollegiate, hosted by North Greenville.
