Trojans Snap Losing Streak By Beating Lander, 6-4

ANDERSON, S.C. - Jason Jones provided the game-winning hit with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning and Nick Wates recorded his 12th save of the season to lead Anderson College to a 6-4 victory over Lander in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. The victory, Anderson's second of the season against Lander, snaps the Trojans' six-game losing streak and improves their record to 31-21. The loss drops Lander to 24-27. With the game tied at 4, Jason Ratliff led off the Anderson eighth with a single, stole second, and scored on Jones' single to right center. Jones advanced to second on a ground out, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored an insurance run on a single by pinch-hitter Marcus Smith. Adam Dymond, the sixth Anderson pitcher of the game, picked up the victory in relief. He allowed one hit, struck out one, and walked two in 1 1/3 innings before turning the game over to Wates with two outs in the ninth. Wates allowed an infield single before striking out Jeremy Ryals to end the game. In the Apr. 20 national statistics, Wates leads Division II in saves. He entered this week with a margin of one save over five other pitchers. The Senators jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third. A double by Jeff Whitfield and a single by Ryals gave Lander a 1-0 lead in the second. In the third, Jonathan Myers led off with a single and scored on a double by Ryan Roeder. Anderson got its first run in the third. With two outs, Jeremy McCauley walked, moved to second on a single by Caleb Owen, and then scored on a single by Jared Taylor. The Trojans took a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Seth Thompson led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. After Owen singled and Taylor popped up for the second out, Ratliff drilled a two-run double to left center to give Anderson a 3-2 lead. Ratliff then scored on a single by Jones. But Lander battled back to tie the game at 4. In the sixth, James Scrubbs led off with a single, moved to third on a double by Tyler Winningham, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Corey Reed. Bob Fenn tied the game at 4 in the top of the seventh with a lead-off home run to left center. Nick Powell, who allowed two runs and three hits in 2 2/3 innings was the loser for the Senators.
