ANDERSON, S.C. - Brett Youngblood limited St. Andrews Presbyterian College to five hits in 8 1/3 innings and Donavon Schmidt provided a two-run double in the third inning to lead Anderson College to a 6-3 victory over the Knights in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference game Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Youngblood, a native of Greer who starred at Travelers Rest High School, struck out just two, but he got 14 fly outs and covered up some shoddy Anderson defense to run his record to 3-0. After playing two errorless games on Saturday, the Trojans committed five errors on Sunday. Two of the Anderson errors led to all three of the Knights' runs. With the victory, Anderson, 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the CVAC, salvaged the third game of the three-game series. St. Andrews is now 12-11, 5-3. Anderson scored a single run in the second to get its first lead of the weekend. Jason Jones led off with a single, moved to second on a single by F.A. Vildosola, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a single by Cody Nye. The Trojans increased their lead to 5-0 in the third by pushing four runs across. Jared Taylor led off with a single and moved to second on a balk. After Dan Kitchens reached on an error, Jason Ratliff singled to left to score Taylor. After Jones grounded out to moved Kitchens to third and Ratliff to second, Schmidt doubled down the left field line. After Vildosola singled to move Schmidt to third, Joe Whitham brought Schmidt home with a sacrifice fly. The Knights, hitless through three innings, got on the board in the fourth when Brandon Lewis doubled and reached third on an outfield error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Catlin. Anderson scored its final run in the fourth. With one out, Taylor singled, moved to third on a single by Kitchens, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ratliff. After Lewis scored, Youngblood retired 13 of the next 15 to take a 6-1 lead into the ninth. In the St. Andrews ninth, Lewis and Catlin led off with back-to-back singles. After Slack flied to deep center, Anderson head coach Joe Miller lifted Youngblood. Nick Wates entered the game and managed to shut down the rally but not before Lewis and Catlin both scored. Anderson catcher Josh Wilson tried to pick off Catlin at first and threw the ball down the right field line. That error allowed Lewis to score and Catlin to advance to third. Catlin then scored on a balk by Wates. After traveling to Catawba on Tuesday, Anderson will return home on Thursday to play host to defending Division II national champion Columbus State.
