Augusta State Scores In 12th To Nip Anderson, 9-8

ANDERSON, S.C. - Bennett Mayfield scored on a throwing error by Anderson College shortstop Jared Taylor in the 12th inning to give Augusta State a 9-8 victory over the Trojans Tuesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Augusta State jumped out to a 7-1 lead through six innings, survived a bases-loaded situation in the 10th, and then pushed across the winning run in the 12th. The victory improves the Jaguars to 28-19. The loss, Anderson's sixth consecutive defeat, drops the Trojans to 30-21. The Jaguars scored five times in the third to seize a 5-0 lead. Andy Hudson provided the big hit of the inning with a two-out, three-run double. Hudson, Mayfield, and Rose all had three hits apiece for Augusta State. Anderson, which managed just one hit through the first four innings, finally got on the board in the fifth. Joe Whitham doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on a single by Charlie Davis. An RBI double by John Graham in the fourth and a run-scoring triple by Lee Rose in the sixth staked the Jaguars to a 7-1 lead. But the Trojans got back in the game with three runs in the seventh and four unearned runs in the eighth. Caleb Owen had a two-run single in the seventh and an RBI single in the eighth. The Jaguars committed three of their four errors in the Anderson eighth. With the game tied at 8, Anderson turned the game over to closer Nick Wates, who struck out five in four innings but suffered his second loss of the season. The Trojans had their best chance to win the game in the 10th. A lead off walk by Whitham, a one-out single by Davis, and an intentional walk to Owen loaded the bases with two outs. But the rally died when Taylor struck out swinging. Davis, making a rare start on Senior Night, led Anderson with three hits. Wates set down 11 straight before Mayfield singled with two outs in the 12th. Rose then reached on an error by Taylor, and Mayfield scored the winning run when Taylor made a low throw on a grounder by Graham. Nate James, the sixth pitcher for the Jaguars, was the winner for Augusta State. He allowed no hits and struck out one in two innings. Game Statistics
