Baseball Team Heads To Wilson For CVAC Tourney

WILSON, N.C. - The Anderson College baseball team opens play in the 2003 Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Tournament Friday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Trojans, 31-21 overall, will play fifth-seeded Limestone at 1 p.m. at Fleming Field. In a tournament format designed by the league's head coaches, the four-team play-in round (seeds 7, 8, 9, 10) and the first round of the tournament both are single elimination. After the field is reduced to four teams, the tournament will change to a double elimination format. Anderson snapped a six-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 6-4 victory over Lander. The Trojans took two of three games from Limestone in late March. The two teams split a doubleheader on Mar. 29 (Anderson 13, Limestone 6; Limestone 8, Anderson 4), and Anderson won the rubber game of the series, 11-10 in 12 innings on Mar. 30. Anderson is led by junior outfielder Jason Ratliff (.378, 14 doubles, 41 RBI), junior outfielder/designated hitter Joe Whitham (.363, 12 doubles, 36 RBI), and junior outfielder Jared Taylor (.361, 8 doubles, 37 RBI). On the mound, Anderson has the nation's leader in saves in senior Nick Wates (6-2, 12 saves, 2.35 ERA). If Anderson beats Limestone Friday, it will advance to face the survivor of the Mount Olive-Belmont Abbey/Longwood game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
