Lancers Spear Anderson Twice

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University got complete games from pitchers Evan Weinstein and Patrick Richardson and the Lancers ripped Anderson College pitching for 29 hits and 23 runs to sweep the Trojans in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lancer Stadium. In the first game, Anderson had a 6-5 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the sixth, but the Trojans could not hang on as Longwood rallied for a 10-7 victory. The big hit in the Anderson sixth was a two-run single by Joe Whitham. The Lancers rallied with two runs in the sixth, a single run in the seventh, and two runs in the eighth. Longwood scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good on three singles, one error, and a wild pitch. Louis Shackelford provided an insurance run for the Lancers in the seventh with a one-out solo home run. Shackelford was 2 for 3 and scored three runs in the first game. Weinstein scattered 12 hits, struck out three, and walked just one. Donavon Schmidt was 3 for 4 for the Trojans in the first game. In the second game, Longwood scored nine runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 13-6 victory. Richardson allowed just six hits, struck out six, and walked three to keep the Trojans in check. Six Longwood players had two hits apiece in the game, and four had two or more RBI. Shackelford drove in three runs, two with a two-run homer in the sixth. Trailing 1-0, the Lancers scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Eric Shirley brought home two of the runs with a double. The first three hitters in Longwood's lineup - Adrian Watkins, Chris Balus, and Robert Gillis - were 6 for 12 with seven runs scored. In the two games, Watkins was 5 for 8 with five runs scored. Whitham and Jason Ratliff had two hits apiece for Anderson in the second game. With the sweep, Longwood improves to 7-8 overall and 4-6 in the CVAC. Anderson falls to 15-8, 4-5.
