SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Newberry shot a 325 on day three of the
Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Golf Championship to stave off
Tusculum by four strokes.
Barbara Castro - who was competing as an individual - was crowned
tournament champion after shooting her best round of the
tournament, a 76 (+4) to put her at 16-over for the event.
Castro narrowly defeated fellow Wolf Eline Askeland and Lincoln
Memorial's Whitney Ball. Askeland needed a par and Ball a birdie to
force a playoff on the par-three 18th. However, Ball went for par
and Askeland bogeyed to cinch the individual title for Castro.
The Wolves' three-day 962 is the sixth best performance in SAC
tournament history while Tusculum's 966 is the eighth best.
The Pioneers' SAC player of the year Emee Herbert led the charge
for TC with a 235 (+19) to finish fourth. Fellow first team
all-SAC performer Jillian Corum followed suit with a 238 (+22) to
finish in seventh.
LMU took third; the Railsplitters were led by Ball's three-day 233
(+17). LMU finished with a 970 - the 10th best three-day total in
SAC tournament history. LMU was four strokes behind Tusculum and
eight back of the Wolves. The Railsplitters joined Newberry as the
only other squad with three golfers in the top 10. Desta Coaker
finished in a tie for fifth with a 237 (+21); Brittany McCown had a
240 (+24).
Carson-Newman saved its best for last. The Eagles turned in the top
round of day three with a 320 to finish fourth with a 982. Meridith
Hawkins finished in the top five for C-N after shooting a third
straight 79 (+7). Hawkins and Castro were the only golfers in the
field to shoot below 80 every day.
Wingate rounded out the top five with a three-day 1009 (+145).
Freshman of the year Johanna Neumann finished tied for 11th with a
244 (+28).
Catawba (1029), Anderson (1052), Mars Hill (1,143) and Brevard
(1,214) rounded out the rest of the field.
Castro, Askeland, Ball, Herbert, Hawkins and Coaker made first team
all-tournament. Corum, McCown, Daneshfar and Howard made the
all-tournament second team.
Individually, AU's Natalie Feder (94-83-84=261) tied for 27th,
while Garyt Hamilton (83-97-82=262) was 29th. Lindsay Parks
(94-87-83=264) finished in the 30th spot, with Katie Eskew
(93-88-90=271) notching a share of 34th and Sarah Timms
(88-98-90=276) was 38th.
