Softball Splits With Georgia Southwestern

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern, coming away with with a 3-2 win and 7-5 loss versus the Hurricanes. The first game displayed a lot of defense and great pitching as Casey Deer started her eighth game of the season by grabbing the win and improving to 4-4 on the year. In the first inning, trailing 1-0, the Trojans put runs on the board early, starting with a Kasey King RBI single, her 19th of the season, to put Anderson up 2-1. Over the next five innings both teams managed to put zeros up on the board through stout defense and sharp pitching. In the final inning of play Georgia Southwestern was able to tie the game, but the Trojans overcame in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore Amber Sutherland hit a dramatic walk-off single that sent Amber Duncan across the plate with the winning run to meet the rest of her team. Junior Casey Deer pitched a complete game and led her team to its 11th victory on the year. In seven innings of work she gave up only two runs and struck out six. The second game of the doubleheader proved to be more offensive. In the fourth inning the Trojans looked at a 5-1 deficit until an Emily Monteith home run cut the Hurricane lead to three. The shot was Monteith's 11th this year. The fireworks didn't stop, as one batter later Amber Duncan sent a homer over the left field wall to cut the Trojan deficit to 5-3. Trailing 5-4 in the sixth, the Trojans continued to chip away at the Hurricane lead, when Elisa Sebastyan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the senior her 21st RBI of the season. The Hurricane mistake allowed the Trojans to send the game-tying run across the plate. In the seventh, defensive mishaps by Anderson led to two Hurricanes runs, which ultimately left the Trojans looking at a 7-5 loss. Donya Cobb's fifth start of the season proved to be her first loss, dropping her to 2-1. She went all seven innings and shined at many points, giving up five earned runs. The Trojans take the field next on Thursday when they take on Mount Olive in a doubleheader that starts at 3 pm at Smethers Field. Game 1 Game 2 Season Statistics
