Trojans Take Two from Fleet

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Paced by three three-run home runs, the Anderson softball team swept a Conference Carolinas doubleheader from rival Erskine, 6-5 and 3-1, Wednesday night at the Erskine Softball Field. Anderson improved to 15-11 overall and 5-1 in conference action, and has won four in a row and five of its last six games, including five consecutive conference games. The Trojans snapped the Flying Fleets' four-game overall win streak, with the twin setbacks also snapping Erskine's seven-game league win streak. Erskine's only other loss in conference play was a one-run loss in 11 innings. Erskine slipped to 15-18-1 overall and 7-3 in Conference Carolinas. The opener saw Anderson score first in the top of the third inning when Kasey King hit a three-run shot to center field to plate Meredith Knox and Emily Monteith, who reached base on a single and a fielder's choice, respectively. The Fleet countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 3-3 on a home run off the bat of Lindsay LaPrad. Two batters later, Courtney Davis followed with a home run to give Erskine a 4-3 edge. Anderson threatened in the top of the fifth by loading the bases on three consecutive base hits with no outs, but were unable to capitalize. However, in the top of the sixth the Trojans managed to get two batters on with two outs and Monteith drilled a line drive down the line over the left-field wall for another three-run home run, giving AU a 6-4 lead. Erskine got a run back on an AU error in the bottom of the sixth and had two runners in scoring position on another error but the Fleet could not push them across. Donya Cobb earned the win for Anderson, pitching a complete game, and surrendering five runs on nine hits. She struck out four and walked only one batter. Kelsey Spurrier suffered the loss in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings and giving up three runs on five hits. Erskine's Larissa Shannon hit a solo home run down the right-field line in the bottom of the second to give Erskine an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap. But Anderson posted three of its four hits in the fourth inning, including a three-run home run by Elisa Sebastyan, to take a 3-1 lead and AU hurler Casey Deer made it stand up, scattering six hits over seven innings and surrendering just the one run, while striking out five. Heather Richey took the loss for the Fleet, tossing seven innings, giving up three runs on just four hits. She also struck out five without surrendering a walk. Anderson gets back on the diamond with a pair of Conference Carolinas doubleheaders this weekend, as Mount Olive invades Smethers Field Friday for a 4 p.m. first-pitch and Pfeiffer pays a visit Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Note: All four contests this weekend will be webcast on www.redzonemedia.com Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score Season Statistics
