Softball Players Garner All-Conference Accolades

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Six Anderson University softball players brought home Conference Carolinas all-conference honors at the conclusion of the regular season, as announced by the league office late Thursday. Shortstop Meredith Knox, catcher Cameron White and designated player Amber Duncan were named to the first team, while third baseman Emily Monteith, pitcher Katie Van Gieson and center fielder Kasey King earned second-team accolades. Knox ranked third in the conference with 10 doubles, third in the league in runs scored and fourth in the conference in hitting percentage. The 5-foot-9 senior posted an 11-game hitting streak and was eighth in the conference in home runs and tied for eighth in total hits. White, a sophomore from Saluda, S.C., recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage while starting 34 games behind the plate for the Trojans and ranked 18th in the league in putouts. The 5-foot-10 Duncan was second in the league in on-base percentage and walks, tied for fifth in the conference in home runs and 10th in the conference in hitting percentage. She notched a four-game hitting streak in mid-March and was third on the team with a .640 slugging percentage and fourth on the team with seven home runs. Monteith, a junior from Clover, S.C., earned conference Player of the Week honors in February and led the conference in RBI, was second in the conference in home runs, fourth in total bases and sixth in the league in runs scored. She opened the season with an eight-game hitting streak and notched two additional four-game hitting streaks. Van Gieson, a fifth-year senior, stood ninth in the conference in ERA, tied for 11th in the league in wins and recorded six complete games, while tying for a team-best 3.27 ERA and earned six wins on the season. King was fifth in the league in hitting percentage, tied for fifth in doubles, sixth in RBI and tied for eighth in total hits. The 5-foot-8 senior started the season with an eight-game hitting streak and was third on the team with 10 doubles and fourth on the team with a .368 batting average. "It goes without saying that I am extremely proud of all our players," Anderson head coach Tommy Hewitt said. "However it's a great achievement to be recognized by opposing coaches in the conference by naming these young ladies to the all conference teams. For the seniors - Meredith, Katie and Kasey it all started four years ago with many hours on the practice field, hundreds of swings, ground balls, fly balls and conditioning. I hope for them the journey was worth the reward. For Cameron, Amber and Emily the journey continues with lots of work yet to do." The fourth seeded Trojans face No 5 seed Mount Olive in first-round action of the conference tournament Friday morning at 10 a.m. All Tournament Teams
