AC Women, St. Andrews Men Claim CVAC Titles

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson College women and the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men won the 2005 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference cross country titles Friday morning at the Pine Lake Golf Course. In the women's 5K race, Anderson's Jennifer Hitt defended her individual title and set a course record and the Lady Trojans had three of the top four runners to earn their second CVAC title in the last four years. Anderson finished with 51 points, 11 points ahead of Queens University of Charlotte. Barton edged Converse, participating in its first-ever CVAC championship event, for third place by one point - 80 to 81, and defending champion Lees-McRae was fifth with 124 points. Hitt, a sophomore from Fountain Inn, S.C., ran the hilly Pine Lake course in 19:17, 12 seconds better than the old course record of 19:29 set by Beth Schultz of Mount Olive in 2002. Hitt took the lead early and steadily built her lead throughout the race. "I would rate this course as a nine on a scale of 10 as far as difficulty because you're either going up or down," Hitt said. "Your time doesn't matter on this course because it's a mental course. I was really nervous before the race because I knew my competition was stiffer this year. After the first half mile my legs felt heavy, but I pushed through because I knew everyone was counting on me." Kelly Chaplin of St. Andrews was second at 19:35, Diana Willard of Anderson was third at 19:44, Kasey Harold of Anderson was fourth at 20:01, and Mary Cloonan of Converse was fifth at 20:07. Hitt was named CVAC Women's Runner of the Year for the second consecutive year. Willard, a freshman from Pelion, S.C., was named CVAC Women's Freshman of the Year, and Anderson head coach Aaron Schaffner was named CVAC Women's Coach of the Year. "This is one of the best days of my life because I was able to repeat and I've got a team backing me up," Hitt said. "I've always dreamed of being on a team like this." In the men's 8K race, St. Andrews placed five runners in the top 15 to win its first CVAC men's cross country title. St. Andrews finished with 32 points to capture the title. Lees-McRae was second with 68 points, Pfeiffer was third with 94 points, Anderson was fourth with 101 points, and Coker was fifth with 116 points. Lewis Martin of Lees-McRae won the individual title with a time of 26:58, one second off the course record. Chris Miller (27:10) and Mitch Cooper (27:43) of St. Andrews were second and third, respectively. Defending individual champion and course record holder David Green of Coker was fourth at 27:48, and Ryan Connelly of Queens was fifth at 27:57. Anderson's top finisher in the men's race was Nate Parsons, who finished seventh with a time of 28:04. Martin was named the CVAC Men's Runner of the Year, Cooper was named CVAC Men's Freshman of the Year, and Gary Aycock of St. Andrews was named CVAC Men's Coach of the Year. 2005 CVAC Women's Championship Results 2005 CVAC Men's Championship Results Anderson College Cross Country Results
