Lopes Named Assistant A.D. - Director of Sports Medicine

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University Director of Athletics, Bill D'Andrea on Tuesday announced that Monica Lopes has been named Assistant Athletics Director - Director of Sports Medicine for the Trojan athletic department.

The position became vacant earlier when longtime Sports Medicine Director, Ed Duval, was named Executive Director of University Wellness at Anderson.

"We are certainly excited to have Monica as our new Director of Sports Medicine," said D'Andrea. "Her relationship with our current coaches and student-athletes is exceptional. Her work ethic and dedication has been obvious as she has served our athletic department with a real passion. We certainly appreciate the job Ed Duvall has done over the past several years in organizing the training room as it exists today and wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

Lopes joined the Trojan athletic training staff in September, 2013 after serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Clemson University. Lopes has worked with the women's soccer, men's basketball and baseball teams and currently serves as the primary athletic trainer with volleyball and softball.

While at Clemson, Lopes worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer covering the No. 13-ranked women's tennis team, with four of the players ranked in the top 30. Lopes earned a Master's of Science degree in Youth Development Leadership at Clemson.

Before attending Clemson, Lopes was a Volunteer Assistant Athletic Trainer at Saint James High School in Murrells Inlet, S.C. where she worked for a year, helping out on a weekly basis with medical coverage and helping the full-time head and assistant athletic trainer as needed.

Lopes graduated from College of Charleston with a Bachelor's of Science in Athletic Training in 2010. She was a student athletic trainer in learning with The Citadel football team, College of Charleston women's soccer and softball teams, and Wando High School spring sports teams.

"I am truly honored and excited for this opportunity to serve the student-athletes at Anderson University," said Lopes. "I would like to thank those who have the confidence in me to fill this position and for offering me the chance to influence and provide quality health care to so many. Over the past four-plus years on staff with the Sports Medicine Department, I have looked forward serving the university and to continue the tradition of improving health care, while working with the administration, the coaching staff and all departments to better the services provided."
