ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University women's golf team posted a solid first round three-over 75 from senior Kalyn Johnson to a third-place finish at the end of day one of the Anderson Invitational Women's Golf Tournament at the par 72, 5,952 yard Anderson Country Club in Anderson on Monday.
Johnson carded a one-under 35 on the front nine and a four-over on the final nine, posting a consistent 12 pars along the way. The Canton, Ga., native currently sits alone in fourth place on the leaderboard in her quest for an individual title.
The Trojans also benefited from another solid round by newcomer Sarah Timms, who turned in the team's second-best round of the day, carding a five-over 77 after recording three birdies on the course. She currently sits in a three-way tie for fifth place at the event.
Junior Lyndsay Parks (39-43=82) finished nine strokes off the pace ate with a 10-over 82 on the day, while senior Laura Buyers wrapped up the day tied for 30th on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Katie Eskew rounded out the scoring for AU on Monday, notching an 86 in her first round.
With a team score of 319 (+31), the Trojans need to make up just three strokes on second-place Flagler (+28) and trail Tusculum by 17 strokes. Anderson sits 10 shots ahead of Erskine (+41) in fourth place. Tusculum freshman Emee Herbert and Lenoir-Rhyne's Katie Thackerson each carded a one-over 73 and share a slim one-stroke lead overall.
The teams are back on the course for final-round action on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
